Sam and Elizabeth were pursuing a variety of great endeavors, especially investing in commercial real estate, when a run-down laundromat in their neighborhood went on the market. They decided to purchase SUDS Laundry at Waring Rd and Summer Ave in 2018 to see what they could make of it.

As novices in the laundry business, they reached out to the surrounding community through Facebook and NextDoor. They asked their neighbors & customers, "what would you like to see in this laundromat?" The overwhelming responses were to have a clean, safe store with working machines. This seemed perfectly reasonable and attainable, so they got to work fixing up the laundromat and replacing all of the broken machines.

Once the store was meeting the basic needs of a laundromat, Sam and Elizabeth began so see other ways that SUDS could practically serve its customers and community. First, they installed bookshelves, added hundreds of books and partnered with The Urban Child Institute to create a kids corner, so that families and individuals could better enjoy their time doing laundry and have access to enriching literature.

Over time, the Wilsons discovered many other opportunities to meet practical needs serving the community, like free laundry nights, distributing laundry vouchers to schools for children in need, library story times, photos with Santa and so much more.

By 2022, SUDS had the most 5 star reviews of any laundromat in the city of Memphis. Sam and Elizabeth had grown to love the laundry business and the endless ways that it is able to strengthen communities and serve many people.

They decided to pursue the goal of growing and multiplying this model at other laundromats throughout the city of Memphis. At the beginning of 2023, they bought their second laundromat downtown and rebranded under the name “ELLIE’S” because of a nickname that Elizabeth received while living in Africa.

Throughout 2023, they continued to add new stores across the city and expanded their staff. By the end of that year, they added a fourth laundromat location in Shelbyville, TN.
